The grizzly bear is one of two bears (the American Black Bear being the other) indigenous to Yellowstone Park. The grizzly is the more aggressive and isolative of the two bears, and is outfitted with long front claws and powerful forearms for unearthing rodents, tearing apart legs for ants and insects, and in bringing down larger ungulates such as elk and bison. Its habitat is open meadows and valleys where such prey are to be found.
This grizzly was carved in tupelo wood using power tools. Rough shaping was completed using roughing bits, and the more detailed work done with diamond, vanadium bits. The hair detail was done with carbide burs, and smoothing and finer texturing with ceramic blue stone bits. After sanding, the body was covered with brown, black, and gray acrylic paint, and covered with polyurethane coat.
